An Tòrr Mòr (the big hill)
Visited by Dr Samuel Johnson and James Boswell. during their visit to Skye in 1773. The farm was tenanted by a family of Macdonalds until the 1890s when it was let to shooting tenants. Eventually one of these, F.E. Loyd, decided to rent the farm as well. His daughter Evelyn took over the tenancy until her death in the 1960s. In the 1960s, Lord Macdonald sold most of the farmland to the Forestry Commission, and much of the eastern side of the old farm was under trees until recently. The Community Trust was able to buy out the forest some years ago.The area is being replanted with native trees, old peat land is being restored and footpaths developed.
